Aspiring leaders, especially women, often hold executive leaders in high regard, assuming they possess unwavering confidence, impeccable decision-making abilities, and an unmatched level of knowledge. However, this is one of the biggest misconceptions.
These misconceptions can be particularly damaging to aspiring women leaders who may feel like they have to have everything figured out to succeed and may be discouraged by the idea that they are not as confident or decisive as their male counterparts. This can lead to imposter syndrome and a lack of self-confidence.
Tip #1 - Confidence
It's essential to understand that executive leaders are not always CONFIDENT because confidence is not always innate; it can be developed and cultivated over time. Many leaders have to work hard to develop the confidence they need to lead effectively.
Tip #2 - Decisiveness
Similarly, DECISIVENESS is often seen as a hallmark of successful leadership. However, the decision-making process can be complex, and even experienced leaders can struggle with making the right decisions. There is an opinion that the key is to be willing to learn from mistakes, take calculated risks, and trust your instincts. I believe we learn from mistakes and reduce risk by truly understanding our customers and stakeholders before making strategic business decisions. It greatly increases the impact of our decisions as it’s no longer just based on instinct. We get more confident in our decisions when they are based on data.
Tip #3 - Knowledge
Another misconception is that executive leaders have all the KNOWLEDGE they need to succeed. However, in today's fast-paced business environment, knowledge becomes obsolete quickly, and leaders must continually learn and adapt. The best leaders are those who seek out new information and perspectives and are open to feedback and constructive criticism.
